I've been asked what I have been eating. I don't have a very exciting answer to this. The food in Thailand was better then the food in Laos. I'm also not a very adventurous eater and I have my own set of very arbitrary and bizarre dietary restrictions. I generally eat a very western yoghurt, muesli and fruit breakfast. Lunch varies. Here in Laos they have baguettes. Outside of the architecture, they are one of the few visible indicators that the French colonized here. Sometimes I'll have a tuna sandwich for lunch. I'm getting really sick of rice. I've just started eating my meals without it. I had been ordering stir fried vegis and chicken a lot so that I could get vitamins and protein in one cheap meal but it is not a speciality and it is hit or miss. Sometimes it leaves and unpleasant aftertaste. I tried Laap which is a specialty of the country. It was pretty good. Basically, it is ground chicken with scallions, red onions, mint and red chilis. Also not the best aftertaste.
There is a lot less tofu then I expected which is a disappointment. There are not as many street vendors in Laos as in Thailand. There was an article in the Vientiene Times, Laos English language newspaper, about street vendors being unsanitary. It seems they use human waste to fertilize their vegetables because it is cheaper and easier to get. Lovely. The animals are free range here. A good thing except that it means that their diet includes a healthy dose of garbage. If I eat anything really good, I'll be sure to report it. Comments
