June 20, 2004Dirty Rotten Scoundrals - DAY 6
DAY 6 - Sunday We met up with Fiona again after some more London exploring. I found a brocher of a 3-hour Jack the Ripper tour that cost 5£, though the cool thing was, it said you pay at the end, and only if you enjoyed the tour! So we went on the tour and learned alot and it was really cool...and at the end we didnt pay, which the tour guide didnt mind so much because there were 50 others in the group that did and he knew we are poor backpackers......ok now i feel bad.......I'll take the tour again some day when i have a career and will give him double and we'll have a laugh, right? right? ![]()
Today Dave and I also went to the British Museum. It was really great. I think so far in my trip (as I am writing this portion in Belgium), the most interesting thing I have seen is the Rosetta Stone. ![]() The Rosetta Stone is a granitoid slab inscribed in hieroglyphic, demotic, and Greek with identical texts of a decree by a council of priests during the reign of Ptolemy V. Part of a stele dating from 196 B.C., it was found (1799) by Napoleon's troops near the city, was taken (1801) by the British, and since 1802 has been displayed at the British Museum. It gave Jean-François Champollion, Thomas Young, and others the key to Egyptian hieroglyphic. (from InfoPlease.com) Comments
Kevin!!! Hope you're having fun in England - Chris and I loved our 2 days, but it wasn't nearly enough.. (though I think we did manage to get most of the obligatory touristy stuff done so we can skip that the next time we go back..). If you go to Westminister Abbey, and actually get to go IN (we missed the visiting time by 15 minutes because we stopped in a pub), I want pictures!!! Love you ;) |
