Jim’s New Girlfriend: Dahab

October 8th, 2007

Our first and only night in Dahab we went to bed in our hotel, the Ali Baba. I was lying half-asleep in my bed the next morning when I heard the camera snapping photos and saw the flash.

I looked at Jim and asked, “Why are you taking pictures of your bed?”

Snorkeling the Red Sea in Sharm

October 6th, 2007

Yesterday we spent most of the day on a boat and snorkeling in Ras Mohammed Marine Park. I dare say the snorkeling was maybe the best I’ve experienced. Along with tons of super colorful fish, we saw a little brown ray and my first moray eel!

JIm calls this pic “Newport Kelly”

At the start of the day, the captain gave us a short safety lecture but told us, “If you remember nothing, at least remember the name of the boat.” (foreshadowing!) So for the next few hours, our boat took us to three different places to snorkel. At the last one, they let us sort of go off on our own and told us to be back at the boat in 45 minutes. Jim and I had a fabulous time and saw so many beautiful fish and were able to go at our own speed. Read the rest of this entry »

Sheikh your Booty

October 3rd, 2007

We are in Sharm el-Sheikh in another nice resort. It makes me feel so normal and boring to be in a resort. There are 4 pools and it is on the Red Sea.

We snorkeled today and it was fantastic.

As always I have no time so no chance to tell you anything. I hate that! The net at the hotel is INSANELY expensive and we are in the touristy part of town for a little while. It’s like being in stinkin’ Cancun. Read the rest of this entry »

The Pyramids

October 2nd, 2007

This morning we arranged a taxi to the Pyramids. We got the same driver as the day before. It’s weird how the Pyramids are right in the middle of a city – not way out in the middle of the desert. The touts there, like everywhere, were bad.

There’s really not much to say – it’s hard to really take in the scope and size of what you are seeing when you are there. Also, it’s very hot and there are touts bothering you – so that makes it a little harder to enjoy.

The Sphinx seemed so small next to the pyramids. We walked around the Great Pyramid and spent 2 hours there total.

We went back to our cabbie and the traffic in Cairo was SOOO bad. We just sat there in a huge traffic jam. People there just make their own rules and somehow make 6 lanes out of 3 and honk at EVERYthing and everyone.

We got back, showered, relaxed, then went our again in Zamalek (the name of the area we are in in Cairo) which apparently is a nice, middle to upper class neighborhood. Did I mention that everywhere in Egypt you’ll walk past butchers with giant pieces of meat hanging in the window, usually legs… and we saw one that still had a hairy tail attached… like a donkey.

The next day we took a super early flight to Sharm el-Sheikh.

Cairo Day 1: Museum

October 1st, 2007

So we flew to Cairo early this morning from Luxor. Everything has been going well.

We went to the Egyptian Museum today and will do the Pyramids tomorrow.
The next day we fly to Sharm el-Sheikh and the fun begins.

We are staying in a sick posh hotel, the Cairo Marriot. We couldn’t stop laughing at how out of place we looked walking in with our backpacks. Read the rest of this entry »

If it’s Monday, it Must be Cairo

Our Trip Song: Africa by Toto

So we flew to Cairo early this morning from Luxor. Everything has been going well.

Jim and I have been battling some minor health issues. He’s been having gastrointestinal problems and I believe I have a cold, although the symptoms are still presenting themselves. I have a very sore throat and today I started to feel a general malaise which is not good. I had to leave the museum and take a nap at the hotel.

Yesterday was a HUGELY packed day in Luxor. We went to the Valley of the Kings, Colossi of Memnon, Hatshepsut’s temple, Medinat Habu and an alabaster shop (where Jim got ripped off). I also found the most amazing shop ever, the Fair Trade Egypt shop – there is one in Luxor and Cairo. I bought some beautiful things, and they don’t hassle you there, it’s cheap, and the money goes to local artisans (and also where we found how much we SHOULD have paid for alabaster). Luxor: Karnak and Luxor Temples

September 29th, 2007

So, I’m currently sitting in a cigarette-smoke filled internet cafe in Luxor, typing on the world’s grodiest keyboard. It’s seriously So, so nasty and hard to type.

This morning we went to the train station at 5:30am to catch the 3-hour train to Luxor. Man, I love trains. They are so relaxing. You can get up and walk around or just sit and stare at the scenery. A much better option than like the day before when we were in a cramped minivan all day.

It was interesting because during the entire ride north to Luxor, the scenery was green fields and lots of different crops with people working in the fields with their donkeys. A stark contrast to the straight-up desert we saw on the way to Abu Simbel. As they say, the Nile gives life!! Read the rest of this entry »
