I grew up in Michigan and moved to New York in 2003 to be with my boyfriend Jim who accompanied me on our RTW (round the world) trip. We visited Singapore, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, the Cook Islands and Tahiti.
I was 23 at the time. Jim quit his job and I left my temp assignment and we were off to finally have some fun. Some travellers argue that a RTW must hit at least 3 continents for it to truly be a RTW. We only hit 2. Oh well. But we did circle the globe.
While Jim and I had both traveled a bit, my experience was much more tame and planned out. I studied abroad for a semester in college in a tiny town in England called Ormskirk (about 13 miles from Liverpool). I spent a couple weeks backpacking in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Sweden- but I went way too fast in a short time. I also went to China in 2002 as part of a college trip, and it was the first (and ONLY) tour I will ever take. We visited Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an and Hong Kong. It was good, but tours make it so you don’t have to think and figure things out for yourself, and that is the BEST part of traveling!!
Jim’s travel experience, at the time, was very laid back, by-the-seat-of-the-pants, no plans at all type of traveling. He lived in Barcelona for 2 years, London for a few months, and Uruguay for a while, not counting tons of time in other places, all over South America and Europe (and he was in Morocco for a few weeks). So, technically, he has been to EVERY continent but ONE! He still has South America over me.
After our big trip, we both have regular jobs and only get 2 weeks of vacation a year, so we save it all to take one trip. It 2005 we went to Spain, Turkey in 2006, and in 2007 Egypt; Petra, Jordan; and Jerusalem.
In 2008 we traveled across the US, spending 1 month each in Vancouver, BC, Portland, OR and San Diego, CA. We are now living in San Diego.
