Issan Region

The Issan region is the north eastern part of Thailand which is famous for it's style of cooking and it's really friendly people. We only spent a couple of days there on our way to Laos but it is worth mentioning a few things....

The first city we visited was Kon Kaen. It was a fairly large city (4th largest in Thailand) but to our surprise there were almost NO tourist there! I was perfectly happy with that except for the fact that most people did not speak english. It was a little frustrating at times but worth it in the end.
There really was not much there of interest to me but there was one interesting temple. It was 9 levels and very ornate.

We had a visitor in our room most of the time we were there. Asia is infested with millions of geckos but it is fairly rare to see a baby of this size! Very cute.

After a couple days we went to Nong Khai which was the border town between Thailand and Laos. It was a very nice small city also without many tourists but a nice view of Laos across the Mekong river. They also had some of the coolest Tuk Tuks I've seen the whole time I've been here:

The 2 main attractions in Nong Kai are the Forrest Temple which was very beautiful and peaceful and a freaky buddhist sculpture park!
Here are some pictures of the Forrest Wat which was in a wooded area and all you could hear was monks chanting and birds chirping.

The sculpture park was very surreal. It was a garden with huge buddhist themed sculptures that looked like something out of a Tim Burton movie.
Here are a couple of pictures.
