June 06, 2005Outback Attack
Oh the sweet sounds of the outback, which are nothing. it's amazing...this is what I needed to feel like I was actually in Australia. And it was the best part of my time here so far. Sleeping under the southern stars, which allow me to see things not visible from the northern skies...countless shooting stars. No i take that back. They were, in fact, countable. And although it was so damn cold out there (as we are in their winter (HA) time). Winter in australia, especially northern territory australia is a joke, but it is quite chilly at nights! So every night, I would not allow myself to go to sleep until I witnessed 10 shooting stars. And as lame as you will all think this is, I made a wish on every single one of them for someone I know who is at a point in their life overwhelmed with decisions to be made, feelings that are there to be felt, and confusion is as free as STD's (1/4 steve, 1/4!). Every night we would play guitar and sing around the campfire, cook our own food (WHERE I WAS SO VICIOUSLY TRICKED INTO EATING CAMEL), scoured for firewood, slept in swags, up every morning for sunrise, and hunted for wichetty grubs, which everyone in the group ate (one guy even eating one raw), except for me. Sorry, but i have no adventure when it comes to meat. We went camping and visited Ayers Rock, The Olgas (more impressive in my opinion), and Kings Canyon. It was like summer camp with a bunch of really awesome fun people. Upon arrival to Alice Springs (after the tour was over), I headed up to Darwin Australia to visit the best cousin in the world. Funny we haven't seen each other in 8 years, and our reunification ends up on the other side of the world in Darwin, Australia (he lives in Ireland). He's also got some pretty sweet roomates that make the house lively in each of their own special ways (monkey attack cycloptic claire!!) We went to a music festival together the other day and had a blast listening to local and national Australian bands and such and not suprisingly enough, the best one there was the only band from New Zealand (ha!). The highlight of the day was when I went to use the facilities, finished my business only to look down and see the worlds biggest frog sitting in the bowl. I screamed so loud out of that little bastards suprise attack. I KNOW it wasn't in there when i first went in becuase there is NO WAY i could have missed that...so naturally i did was everyone would do, i flushed. This was mainly a scientific test to see if he could hold on, as I was sure he could judging by the size of him. He passed, I got my proof, and i went on my way back to my musical delights. I really can't wait to go to more live music shows on my trip. His roomate are a bunch of awesome girls who know how to have a good time, so we've just been living it up since I've been here in Darwin. My time in Australia is soon about to wind down. But I must say, there will be plenty of more adventures to be had in that time as I have still yet to visit the east coast. There will be sharks, diving, sailing, camping, dancing, and hopefully more white water rafting, basically all sorts of shenanigans (shout out darwinians!). Innocent east coast bystanders by day, animals by night. Comments
