March 10, 2005Tahiti
So tahiti was tahiti. first off, i should say i had a HELL Of a beginning of a trip.. and not in a good way..first i swear to god, if ANYONE OF YOU ever fly airtran, i will disown you. thos assholes lost my baggage and then did nothing to help me through it.. seriously they suck. (THANKS AMANDA). yeah..amanda put me up in atlanta that night, then on to LA, where my bags still hadn't arrived..so i left for tahiti without them and STILL they hadn't caught up to me. by this time, i hadn't slept in like 2 days, i smelled like shit gone wrong, and i was just really unhappy and stuff. I coudln't wait to leave tahiti at that point i was so frustrated...but soon enough i got my bags and was on my way. I decided to leave mainland Tahiti immediately. It just wasn't what i expected...and I arrived in Moorea, which is the next island of the group. It was absolutely superb. I stayed at a place called Pension Motu Iti which was RIGHT on a lagoon. I spent my days there kayaking in the lagoon, snorkeling, resting, reading, writing..you know..the typical island stuff. I at some point, kayaked all the way out to the reefs, and got out of my kayak to see where the ocean dropped off to see a little lagoon shark speed past me. It was exciting, but sure enough my ass was back in my kayak in -3 seconds. I got seriously sunburned, probably to the point of sun poisoning cause I threw up later that day. AND this was WITH 45 spf...man the sun sure doesn't kid arond in the south pacific. Tahiti all in all was really fun, while the people I met helped with that. Me, three english girls, and another american lazed our days away in a little bungalow on the water. We'd wake up and say "hey what should we do today?" only to decide the best answer possible. NOTHING. i know this is something many of you are used on on a daily basis (AHEM tally crew), but for the first time in what seems like my whole life, i did nothing. The one thing I didn't realize about travelling is you become unwound and reordered by mother nature. By that i mean before this, waking up at 6 am was suicide and going to sleep before 4 am was unheard of. Now? Im asleep usually by about 11 or midnight, and up with the roosters and sun. But I'm never tired! I guess some things just don't change. I left Tahiti on the 7th of March, and nearly missed my flight to the Cook Islands. I fell asleep in the airport to have a stewardess wake me saying "your flight is leaving!" I was so out of it, I jumped up, and scared her. Then i took off running for my plane and they took off about 2 minutes later. Let me say one thing, if ANY of you ever think about going to tahiti, get off the mainland as soon as possible. Moorea was what you expect paradise to be. Huge cliffs which would remind you of something prehistoric. Looks like the cliffs in Jurassic Park. The palettes of color you will see, where the sky seems to melt into the ocean, are the most beautiful group of blues you could imagine. I layed out on the floor of the bungalow one night to see the stars, and for the first time I realized I was seeing stars I have never seen before. It kind of heightened the loneliness I had felt to know that me and the people i care about the most weren't necessarily sharing the same starry nights, but I also couldn't help but be excited at the newness of it all. I must say, for those of you who don't think twice about air conditioning, or an ice cube in your glass, next time you experience either of these, think of me and realize the luxuries you have! and GOD DAMN the mosquitoes! see ya in the cook islands! oh darling, i am still laughing at the mental picture of you pandling away in your little kayak and thinking,"oh what a nice reef, i think i will just stop off here and think a while about the world." then your little daydream is interrupted by the sight of a shark, and at first you probably thought to yourself, "wow, i have never seen one of those up close, what is it?" and then, it dawns on you, it is a shark, and never matter what kind of shark, you think, "man-eater" and you get your ass back in your canoe and paddle you little heart out with the worst scene from the movie jaws playing over in your head. well, at least thats what i envisioned, and the man-eating concept is all me- i dont know how you conceptualize shark, and perhaps it was a much smaller, bottom feeder shark, but for here, in tally, i was imagining you, a kayak, a nice little reef, and fucking jaws passing by. glad to hear you were not eaten up. i love you sooooo much Posted by: lindsay on March 10, 2005 10:05 PMAWEEEE i could cry.... your exceprt was amazing.
