Rough Day
Just for an update. I headed back to my bungalow after I used the internet earlier and tried to lay down. The room was disgustingly hot with no a/c and a broken toilet. I asked for an a/c room and was willing to pay more but with the big full moon party coming up the entire island is practically booked full. There is no airport so I had to scratch the idea of flying to Bangkok. I decided to try and head into town. My hotel wasn’t very helpful and they doubled the price to get into town from the prevoius day. I’m not sure if it was because they knew I really needed to get there and was in a dire situation or that they doubled it because the party is getting closer.
This entire island has an energy right now waiting for the full moon so everyone can party their asses off. I didn’t come here specifically for the full moon party but thousands of people did. Every month it is tradition to gather on Haad Rin beach in Ko Pha Ngan to celebrate the cycles of the moon. It is sort of a mecca, along with Ibiza and a few other spots, for ravers, clubbers, party goers and the like. I was excited about taking part because the social aspect is great but at this point I just want a nice room to sleep in with a tv so I can keep my mind straight.
I took the rip off deal from the hotel and paid 200 baht ($7) and headed in to town. I wanted to be near the clinic since I have to go back tomorrow and the day after to get cleaned and re-wrapped. After a few tries I got nothing and every hotel owner said I won’t be able to find a room anymore and it was starting to look apparent. I finally opted for the big hotel up the road called Drop In Resort and Spa. Their cheapest room was way out of my budget but I can’t be picky right now and have to take care of myself so I got it. He only has 2 nights available and on the night of the full moon I have to look elsewhere, which will be impossible. He offered me the penthouse for the night of the full moon and that is about $200 so basically it looks like I have to cut my trip a bit short. I am going to stick it out for the wedding at the end of March and then decide whether it is a good idea to continue into Laos and Cambodia.
My biggest concern at this point is infection. In the tropics scabs don’t form the same as in temperate zones so I am at risk of gang green and other bacterial stuff. I think for now just being in an airconditioned room and resting should do the trick. I can’t shower for a couple of days so I am going to be pretty antisocial.
Incase anyone was wondering. The management from my first hotel where I rented the bike asked how the bike was before asking me how I was. I understand it is their lively hood and they need bikes available to rent out but damn, that was pretty cold. I had to hand over a couple hundred for bike repairs since I signed a form saying I would.
Ugh, just took my medication so it is time to lay down. Getting more sore and I’m sure it won’t be any better tomorrow morning.
Goodnight.

aww poor joey!!
have you looked into hotels on samui for the fmp night? they should have a lot of boats shuttling people back and forth throughout the night until the morning, 30min. but i guess that depends on how much you wanna move, given your injuries. :\

well, at least you will look ridiculous for a while and not be able to explain your appearance to most people… just so you arent focusing on the negative.

Hey man sorry to hear about the bike wipeout—the last time I was in Thailand I witnessed a few so it made up my mind not to rent one. I can believe the owners of the bike were more wooried about it’s condition than your injuries. Glad it was only scrapes and no stitches or worse. As for southern Thailand I would be hesitant to venture that direction. Jan and I will be in Pattaya on April 10th. If you are still in the area it would be cool to meet up for some beers (on me of course) and photos. You could meet Jan’s son, Glenn, and his mates—a couple of them even own a bar! I have to admit I am envious of you and your travels. Good for you that you have desire and balls to take off on your own—-it is a big and changeing world—-keep traveling it. I will stay in touch— Good Luck and BE SAFE my friend

Glad you blogged all this!
Regarding the hostel owners and the damaged scooter, and from my own experiences in the region, I have learned that “life is cheap” in Thailand. It is disturbing and very much an eye opener to see and hear it.

Well it looks like you know what you have to do for a while. Pamper yourself, take your meds, and make sure you heal. Are you sure it wasn’t 6 Malaysian dudes ?
Get well.
