August 12, 2005Film Noir: Experimental Photography
You can tell you've made some good friends when they not only put up with you taking two hours of their time for a photo shoot.... they volunteer for it!! I had to shoot a test roll of black and white film in the style of film noir last week. For those of you who don't know, film noir is a French style of film from about the 50s that uses extremely high contrast shots to tell a story. Usually the plot revolves around a murder, a kidnapping, or some other sort of strange event. It's usually a mystery to be solved, and often involves detectives, trains, shadows on the walls, venetian blinds, etc. I decided to do a modern version of this with a little kick at the end... hopefully it ends up being humorous! Here are some of the "making of" pictures that we took along the way: Also, I'm aiming for this to be done and ready to put up in the upcoming Arts Festival... dunno if that's going to happen, but I do know that whoever wins the People's Choice award gets a free haircut from Joe Bailey... one of the most famous hairdressers in Australia. (He did Princess Diana's hair!) Joe came to speak to the Women's College this past Monday at our formal dinner (We have formal dinners every Monday night where we have to wear academic gowns... It feels very Harry Potter). He's very gay and very rich, and it was quite interesting to sit and listen to him. Some of the other 4th year girls I sat with had many things to say under their breath, particularly when he commented on how one does not have to be a celebrity to have made it in life-- being a mother is success in its own way. No, but in all seriousness, thankfully the man had some worthwhile things to say such as today's beauty is not about a certain style or look, but it's very individual. "It's beautiful to be you" I think is how he phrased it. In any case, I have faith in my photos and it would be damn cool to have someone do my hair that did Princess Diana's... plus, I just need a hair cut. Alright, that's it for now. Maybe I'll introduce some of the people in my life in some of the next entries. I know some of my new friends are waiting for me to say someting about them (ehem-- BENNY AND TOM!!!)
