July 22, 2005Day 2, July 16: Hobart
Wandered about Hobart all day, from 9 am till 5:30 pm with a lunch break to warm up. I had to buy mittens and a scarf today at the market, I was so cold!! It's a cute town, but very low key. Not much going on on Saturdays except that market, which was phenomenal. Watched a sideshow entertainer fit himself through a tennis racket by dislocating various appendages- I've got pictures to prove it! He also swallowed a sword (old hat-- just kidding) and turned himself into a human pretzel. Ah, those contortionists! The city's got a bunch of history, especially in the part of town named after the Battery-- they tried four times to defend their humble piece of land, and each time they failed. Funny thing was, they were never... EVER... under any immediate danger. In any case, Tassie has the most remnants of colonial history, so Karl and I tend to feel quite at home.
