July 10, 2005Day 13-17: Musical Accommodations
Aigh!! We've changed accommodations FOUR TIMES in the four nights we've stayed in Cairns. I guess once you get to the tropics, finding a place to stay is a bit more difficult! The first night, we stayed in a great little caravan park on the outskirts of town. It was great until it started raining... Karl ended up sleeping in a wet sleeping bag. In the hopes that the tent would dry during the day while we were at the scuba course, we left it up with all of our things in it, wrote a note saying we'd keep the same spot for the next night, and went off to the Pro-Dive facility. Well, Caroline left early from the course and went back to take care of a few items-- among those, pay for the tent site once more. Sadly, however, Eva, Karl and myself were in the pool doing the exercises in the cold rain whilst planning where we'd go for a dry place to sleep that night. When our dive instructor Mick dropped us off after the classes, we met the disappointment of Caroline already having payed for the site!! Luckily, the caravan park allowed us to switch over to one of their empty cabins which turned out to be quite nice. All of us planned to stay there the next night too. We were happily in the midst of the second day of classes when Caroline popped into the rental shop with the urgent cry of, "They took our cabin away!" Well, it wasn't so much that they took it away as much as it had already been booked for the evening, so poor Caroline had to frantically find a place to stay for the third night. She found Club Crocodile, a less than stellar hostel-like accommodation for far more than one would pay for a hostel. None of us (including Caroline) were completely pleased with the outcome of that night, but we made it and managed to successfully board the boat the next day. After spending two spectacular nights in a yacht cabin that rocked us to sleep each night, we moved on to a hostel by the water which was probably the second best hostel we'd stayed in. Needless to say, shuffling all the luggage from location to location was rather trying, but we made it and can now honestly say that the trip was a success. But more on that in the next entry. Still looking for your pictures. Poor Caroline. How did she get stuck with all the booking duties! What have you been eating? Do you buy meals everytime, and have you given up on the kind of food that you normally would eat? When you grocery shop, do you try to find backhome food, or are you now fixing aussie casual cusine in your tents? Just curious. Post a comment
