my first swahili

The word safari in swahili means “journey”. Or at least, it used to. Nowadays it seems like safari means “rich man’s journey”. A few weeks ago I was looking into the safari options that exist in Tanzania, and just about all of them are prohibitively expensive. We’re talking around $250 a day or so per person, and that’s pretty much the bare minimum. Actually, I was told by Donovan from bootsnall the bare minimum was around $150-$200, but I “wouldn’t want to do that”. I don’t know what that means, but I’m going to take his word for it.

WIth the amount of walking I’m going to be doing, it seems practical to have a small pack size. I’ve seen a lot of people lugging around the titanic on their backs, and it just doesn’t seem like I would be able to pull it off. Sure, walking through Hanoi on my way to wherever I’m sleeping I could probably manage. Lets face it though, I’m a weakling. Combine this lack of Chuck Norris with trekking for a month in Nepal and there is bound to be much misery. Therefore, I’ve decided I’m going to carry the smallest pack I can get away with. It seems as if many have gotten away with 40 liters, but it also appears most of them haven’t gone camping. Since I’ll be carrying potentially about a weeks worth of food at a time, and a tent, it may not be possible. I’m going to give it a go though. Last night I was able to fit all of the clothes I’d be taking with me quite easily into a little blue Eastpack backpack, that’s maybe 25L, so I’m fairly confident. Of course, it didn’t have a sleeping bag or any of the other things I’ll probably need to take besides clothes. Anyhow, here is my list as of today, we’ll see how this changes. The pack will have one less pair of most things in it at any given time, unless I feel like playing the nudist for the day, which seems unlikely.
