Mountains & cold

After monkey-san it was time for mountain-san.  Matsumoto, a gateway to Kamikochi & the Japan Alps was our first stop.  We stayed in a lovely wooden ryokan – Nunoya – tlc had been applied to this one! The only downside was the low doors (although this is an on going general problem in most places we have stayed in).  Nick suffered here more than I & banged his head on many an occasion getting to the loo!! Yudanaka (or in Nick speak: Monkey-san)

Whilst not in Yudanaka per-se, Jigokudani Yaen-Koen (or wild monkey park) is a strange place designed to get humans as close to the monkeys as possible, but not in a very attractive way.  The place is famous for its wild monkeys (or to give them their proper names gelada baboons) that sit in hot pools to keep warm in the cold winter months.
