September 30, 2004Prague
28th-30th Sept We got to Prague at around 12,20pm, and had to catch the metro to the main train station so we could walk to our accomodation and can i say one thing if i may ... PRAGUE IS AMAZING I always thought you couldnt compare Venice to any city but Prague has come so close its not funny...I felt like the clock was winded back about 5-600 years or so, unbelievable Art Nouveau inspired buildings and artworks everywhere and I didnt know which way to turn my head! if only my neck would spin 360degrees! We walked along Washingtonnova and towards our Hostel on Jenca, backpacks were heavy but I was still taking photos (oh by the way, just for your info, Ive taken nearly 300 pics of Prague alone...hehe what can I say, its beautiful) This place is a MUST SEE for travellers to Europe. While I was walking around I could just imagine the horse carriages and the busy streets bustling and the people in their old style clothes chatting and commuting, it really is an amazing place, from what I know, it is a republic and is a communist country but all that will change in the year 2007 when they adopt the Euro, everything will get much more expensive as well, I believe it will end up like Dublin, maybe worse as it is a much more touristy place because of Prague Castle We had to convert euros into Cezch crowns, got about 30chk for €1, prices are ok here, comparable to sydney for the clothes and other goods... Food is amazingly cheap though and I now regret not buying some to take along with me! a burger and coke is under €1 at some places... Ok, well, had a lot of time looking around in Prague im glad to say, very happy with our choice of accomodation, not too central but still in the city centre...Saw the ´dancing building´which is a very interesting peice of work, it is a building which merges straight into the surrounding historic buildings even though it is modern, it has a lean to it in the tower and looks like its dancing Charles Bridge (named after King Charles) is the main bridge used to access Prague Castle and the ´lesser city area´across from the city centre. It has about 35 amazing statues depicting scenes from the Bible on each side, many stalls and beggars and just a lot of people walking up and down and admiring the scenes Prague Castle...WOW, very nice but very touristy...the Cathedral which was built in the 9th Century was amazing! it was pretty expensive for the ticket to get in, about €10 but u get into all the main parts of the Castle, Daniel and I scabbed a tour of the tower in the Cathedral for free, we molded ourselves to the tour of School children and crept past the old guard who I think tried to stop us but we kept going! whoops...287 steps later we reach the top huffing and puffing having gone up a small narrow staircase...BUT the view was well worth it and we were so glad we were able to see the view...from the top we saw this really weird looking wall looked like a whole pile of grey matter had been spilt down the wall of this building and shapped into icicles, I wanted to now what it was! oh well, took some photos of it and hey guess what, later on I went searching for it, not knowing exaclty where it was but found it in some gorgeous garden. It was a sculpture which was created by an artist and hidden in the folds of cement were faces and animals and secret passage ways which the viewer had to try to find. There was also an Owl santuary where they had 4 Mountain Owls, they were HUGE! i love how the heads turn 360! It was pretty expensive to get the ticket for Prague castle so instead we got the headset which told us about the history of the castle and what it is today. The Cathedral was built in the 9th century and the palace was built around it in the 12th century, in the 14th century it was renovated due to a huge fire that erupted and destroyed a lot of the property, it now houses the parliament and the Popes and a lot of important meetings take place here... We walked through the gardens a bit more, came upon a huge fish pond and there were the biggest most healiest juiciest fish we had ever seen! Dangals was about to put his head in and catch one with his teeth! they were huge and every now and again one would jump out of the water and scare the vorigs off of us! Went and had something to eat in the city centre, good food, good place to be, and at this time, good company, we chatted to an old american couple who were also in Prague on holidays, they were so interesting to chat to, we had our dinner and they had drinks, actually, they were about to leave when we got there but kept ordering beer and chatting to us, we were talking about everything, from America and its states to Australia and its kangaroos! the man was a war veteran and knew a lot about politics and he sounded EXACLTY like Sean Connerry with that "shhhh shhh" before every word, it was so funny! he brought his golf clubs around as well!! ended up having the worst waitress though who was a complete butthead and we didnt like her at all, i think she overcharged us as well, she was weird... There was a really nice Greek restaurant there as well and I had my boost of iron by having the nicest chicken liver (other than my mums!) the shops were all the same but it was worth going in to them because of the buildings. Last day - boys went shopping and bought heaps of clothes, I went walking around the streets that I hadnt seen before, and met up with them later on, wasnt in the mood for shopping which is good considering I have to carry it all around with me which is not fun at all...bought some little stuff then we had something to eat, walked around abit more and then headed over to the Train station, we booked in 2nd class cos there were no more seats in 1st class, shizzen, and then got into our carriage 289, if u get in the wrong carriage u may end up somewhere else! they seperate the carriages at some station and they go different directions, i would love to know exactly how that works! anyway, got to Munich at around 6.30am VERY TIRED...
