July 05, 2005Munich
John and I woke up to find out that it was PISSING it down. Unwilling as I was to go out into this world with the characteristics of Niagara Falls and a freezer, we suited up in our jackets and headed for Marienplatz, hoping to locate the tour guide for our walking tour of the Munich known to Adolf Hitler. It was no problem to locate the guide, but the weather worsened as we awaited the start of our tour. We started back at the Höfbrauhaus, where we saw the picture postcards painted by Hitler to sell to tourists and examined his use of drinking culture to influence people (summary: when you´re drunk, you rarely double check the facts). We then proceeded to the site of the confrontation between the Nazis and the police during Hitler´s failed Munich Beer Hall Putsch. To the right of this area is a small segment of golden bricks, on a road formerly known as Dodger´s Alley. After the rise of Nazism, a memorial was established by the Third Reich to commemorate the Beer Hall Putsch, and all passerby were required to salute it. Those who chose not to were prosecuted by the Gestapo, so anti-Nazis walked around the monument using this alley. The tour proceeded to the White Rose monument, commemorating five students guillotined for printing resistance pamphlets. Flowers rested above the monument. We walked around buildings erected by the Nazis, now art museums and a music school. These were universally built in a neoclassical style to suit the artistic preferences of Hitler. Hitler hated abstract art, and the only modern art gallery was defaced to propagandise against it. The tour ended in Königsplatz, headquarters of Nazi government. We had intended to tour Dachau this afternoon, but persistent rain left John and I soaked to the bone and cold to boot. We returned to our pension, grabbed some takeout and showered and rested, after the cold morning in pursuit of the madman. Comments
Dodger's Alley sounds really cool! Too bad about the pissing bit... How's the chaos over there? We got another postcard today. They've all been added to the wall of quotes in the kitchen. Makes for nice decorations. It rained like crazy here the other day and our basemet toillette shot out sewage water till most of the carpet was soaked. So, Marisa and I have been cleaning out boxes of books and clothes that have been damaged by the "flood". Missing you!!!! Thank you all for you concern for my friends and family during these attacks on London. They are not the first Tube bombings I remember, but always upsetting. Fortunately, those my loved ones who use the Tube on a daily basis are safe and accounted for. Posted by: Jane on July 10, 2005 05:52 AMPost a comment
