Rome

John and I were really hating the Eternal City on the morning of the next day, and when we stood in line to check our luggage. However, it decided to show us a new face.

We were on a 4:05 train to Florence, so we went out to the Colesseum and to the Roman Forum. Struck by the grandeur of the Arch of Constantine, we spent a cheap three hours (free, actually) wandering the ruins and marvelling at the constructions of classical times. It was really great, and didn't seem crowded at all, despite the hordes of tourists. Across the road was an archaeological museum with statuary and an audiovisual presentation to demonstrate the plans for improving Rome's public transport and roads (expanding the Metro system extensively, and renovating it, an excellent idea, I think).

Men dressed as gladiators posed with people for expensive photographs, but it seemed calmer compared to the theme park that was Vatican City (I was mentally calling it CatholicWorld by the end, with everywhere hawking rosaries, postcards of John Paul and Benedict as well as beer and soft drinks).

Our train to Florence zipped along and we found our hotel in the sultry heat. We were ushered to a spacious room with comfortable beds near the Duomo, and so far have enjoyed our stay here. I will return to enlighten you all as John searches for more activities to keep himself entertained as I peck away to you all. Be sure to comment - it motivates me to send postcards and perks us two up to know people are interested in what's gone on.
