June 15, 2005Valencia
I think I lost some readers over my stay in Alicante. However, postcards are on the way! (providing I have addresses...) What can you do in Valencia? Well, I tried to go to the Museum of Modernism, but I canīt seem to find the front door. So I had to try something else. The cathedral is beautiful, and very untouristed. However, it is very busy because of being the shrine of Our Lady of the Abandoned. The cathedral is almost totally devoid of stained glass, making the appearance inside lighter than say, Notre Dame in Paris. The heart of the church is supposed to contain the chalice used by Christ at the Last Supper (Holy Grail found!) but is presently under renovation. If you stroll behind the church, you see a basilica. Proceed south towards the government plaza, and beyond, you see the stunning modernist train station. (I may have mentioned the train station before, but it is no joke, it is beautiful). You walk a lot here, and so, John and I decided to fuel up our bodies and go on a little splurge. For 41, we had a three course meal each with drinks and coffee (sample menu: roasted tomatoes with Camembert, house speciality spare ribs, tiramisu, cafe solo with chocolate) in a charming and romantic restaurant across from a small farmerīs market. It is called Restaurant La Carme, on C/Soguers. The staff were very friendly and helpful (as are most Spainards, Iīve discovered) and we really capped off our night by eating out like the Spanish - 9 PM. (Actually, at 9, we were ridiculously early!) Comments
mmmm tiramisu... my excitement for the day: I counted and rolled my coins. I have over $70 not counting loonies and toonies.
