May 20, 2005Salisbury
(Grrrr.) Salisbury is famous for its splendid Cathedral, complete with the tallest spire in England, measuring 123 metres. The whole Cathedral is a masterwork of masonry, intricately carved on the outside as well as the inside, and the whole thing is outstandingly beautiful. The opening photograph is of the High Altar viewed from the back of the church. Other notable features include the working medieval clock, the beautiful stained glass and the best surviving copy of the Magna Carta, located in the Chapter House. The Chapter House carvings were my favourite, being amazingly lifelike representations of scenes from the Bible. The cathedral is presently being restored, so unfortunately, the exterior is largely obscured by scaffolding. John and I had driven down to break our journey towards Penzance, where the last surviving grandparent awaited. The Penzance interlude will be covered in the next entry, and if I'm honest, in Brutopia next fall, in vivid detail. Comments
