May 15, 2005A Sweet Saturday on the Thames
Today was our last day to sightsee in London, and as experienced London tourists, we decided to take things at a slower pace, a luxury rarely afforded to the traveller. A word about photos: I have been snap-happy, but Hugh's computer has been tetchy, so I'm unwilling to fiddle about with it. Anyhoo: the weekend. I have made art a real focus in this part of London; for a first time trip to this city, it is not what I would recommend, although the art here is fantastic. John and I wandered along the Thames from Westminster to Pimlico. In between these two stations lies the Tate Britain, which houses a phenomenal collection of British art for a suggested donation of £2 (special exhibitions extra, I would suggest booking ahead if possible). What makes the Tate Britain so wonderful is the arrangement of the pieces around a certain theme that educates the viewer about the historic movements of art that grasped Britain at a particular time. It is also interesting in how it approaches folk art and grapples to find a definition of the phrase. Notable paintings housed there include the Lady of Shalott and Hogarth's Roast Beef of England (you'll have to forgive me, my notes for this are atrocious). However, the most striking painting was, for me, Henry Fuseli's Lady Macbeth Seeing the Daggers, providing two lovely ghostly figures over a gloomy backdrop. The way Fuseli has chosen to portray his figures encapsulates the story of Macbeth. Since my acquaintace with this computer is coming to a rapid close, I have been searching for internet cafes located out in the towns of England, where we will now be heading. Tonight, John and I go to Salisbury, in Wiltshire, home of the famous cathedral, and we will also pass by Stonehenge. There may be a brief lull of a few days of updating. Comment please!
