April 10, 2005Ecuador
I submitted my work application for my volunteer project in Ecuador in August. I don't know where my placement will be, but hopefully it will be close to the city of Cuenca. Ultimately, it relies on the needs of the community, but I have requested to work with children, due to my association with Free the Children. Also, I'm booked in to get my immunizations soon - due to my zealot mother, I'm fortunate that I will be receiving relatively few. Free the Children Montreal is wrapping up a very successful year. FTC empowers youth to take action in the global sphere, using education as their most potent weapon. We just had a very successful week, with our coffeehouse and open mike, film festival and hip hop concerts raising a good chunk of change for development projects. It is always comforting, in the face of the immense challenge of hunger and poverty, to know that making a difference is always possible. I have had other thoughts about FTC and development work in general, but maybe I will share them at a later date. Here's a photo of a good chunk of the McGill chapter (with a few guests!) at Amelio's, an Italian restaurant in Montreal. Comments
