April 04, 2005Halong Bay (pictures)
(Irina) I have often wondered what the phrase "hauntingly beautiful" means... It is the best way to describe Halong Bay... The boats you take to see the bay now have air conditioned cabins with hot water and the nicest "happy places" this side of the DMZ. HP: Captain Stubing and Gopher would be jealous (IP: for the non-Americans, this is a reference to some weird american show that we were lucky to have never seen.) HP: See the love boat photos from Halong bay. Last time I was in the bay I crossed to Cat Ba island on a cargo vessel. Times have changed. View image View image The bay itself is incredibly beautiful - the pictures just don't do it justice. Viet-monkey in its natural habitat. View image This was the bamboo hut we stayed at the second night. Cell phone worked though - so much for escaping civilization. Across from our island was Monkey Island. "60 monkeys and 2 people, yah," explained our guide. "People protect monkeys, yah." Remnants of Uncle Ho's boat: View image Actually, this was a deserted beach, one of many in the bay. During the day the tide is low, revealing wide strips of rock and sand with all kinds of marine creatures. Speaking of Uncle Ho, there are close to 2,000 islands (rocks) in Halong Bay. So, the authorities have dcreed that there are exactly 1969 islands, because 1969 was the year Uncle Ho died. Comments
These pictures are just phamtastic! I swear I've seen this somewhere in a dazed and distant dream...or was it a James Bond movie? Ps. Why is it so dark? Is it the camera or the weather? And who's uncle Ho? Is he of the Chi Minh dynasty? I just caught up with this blog today using Irina's computer, as mine always crashes when I open it for some reason. All's well here. Have an extra spicy pho for me.
