March 30, 2005Pictures from Hanoi
(Irina) Here are some pictures from our days in Hanoi. (More pictures from Sa Pa will be coming shortly.) The first bowl of pho (beef noodle soup) - delicious! View image Huey's early morning pho stand: View image And the first handful of xoi (sticky rice with sausage) - my favorite Vietnamese dish. The little xoi stand has a line in front of it all day. View image Another xoi stand, with Huey's grandmother and one of his aunts: View image And the first meal of cha ca (fish sauteed in dill and spices): View image Hanoi's Old Quarter - typical streets: Irina in ninja moped gear: View image Hoam Kiem Lake in the center of Hanoi. The legend is that one of Vietnam's emperors had a mgic sword which he used to vanquish all his enemies. One day after a big victory he was walking by the lake and a giant turtle appeared and snatched the sword. The sword was thus restored to its rightful owners. Now there are two pagodas in the lake. A smaller one: View image. And a bigger one which contains a stuffed turtle. The One Pillar Pagoda: The story is that one emperor, who was heirless, dreamed that he had met The Goddess of Mercy who - while seated on a lotus flower - handed him a male child. Shortly after his dream, he did have a child. The pagoda is built on one pillar in order to resemble the lotus flower. View image This next one is for my mom and dad: this is a picture from the ceramics village next to Hanoi. Just imagine the garden-decorating possibilities :) View image Comments

We miss you of course... but its great to see you guys over there. S.E. Asia is such a special and different place it's great to be reminded of how vastly different the world is. Especially how at every moment there are experiences occuring in such different ways. One question do the vietnamese put 3,4, and 5 people on one moped or is it strictly 2? Enjoy !!!! xo~ Rachy w/u in spirit: i am eating a 12 inch bahn mi w/more jalapeno slices than inches along w/summer roll (my mom call them cha go) all in the OC bought from well-to-do viet rest in strip mall and eaten in prof office, like a com in hanoi Posted by: ernesto phernandez on April 2, 2005 03:33 AM |
