January 16, 2005Ko Chang
Hello from our first Thai beach. We're currently in Ko Chang, which is in the Gulf of Thailand near Cambodia. It's a lovely island, or so I hear. We can't actually see too much of it because it's too cloudy but at least it beats the heat of Bangkok. Prior to coming here, we spent 3 days in Bangkok acclimatizing to the heat, which is pretty brutal. Bangkok is your typical big city which means I don’t really like it but it has everything you want or need. We spent one day on the river ferry, which is a great way to cover vast distances and see some of the city from the coolness of the water. We spent another day on a day tour to Thailand’s second capital city – Ayuthaya – which has some great old ruins courtesy of the Burmese army in the 1700s. Other than those two excursions, we've mostly spent our time eating and running errands – like buying supplies and getting some clothes tailored. The food here has been surprisingly delicious. I say surprisingly since we didn’t remember the food being very good on our last trip here, but we’re being a bit more adventurous this time around. We made our first foray into the food stalls – we had no idea (still have no idea) what we ate, but it was souplike and delicious. Ko Chang is supposed to have some great snorkeling so we’ve booked a boat tour for tomorrow even though the visibility is pretty bad. Then we plan to head off to Sihanoukville, Cambodia (I know I slaughtered that spelling) unless the weather here clears up. Sorry I don’t have much to report, but we haven’t really been doing much anyway. We’ll add some photos to the last two blogs when we get a chance. In the meantime, leave comments if you're inspired – we love getting them! Comments
