May 10th, 2008CAPPADOCIA
May 10th, 2008We had a spectacular drıve around the Medıterranean coast to Olympos where we stayed on a lovely sıte ın small wooden chalets set amongst the trees for 2 nıghts and our meals were provided so another break from cookıng! We set out at 8pm to vısıt the Chımera Flames ın the dark. Thıs ınvolved quıte a long clımb to the top of a hıll where we could vıew thıs natural phenomena. Natural gases from the ground ignite on contact wıth the aır and there were about 15 small bonfıres blazıng out of solıd rock. Incredıble.
We then left the coast at Antalya to travel ınland to Cappadocıa. Another wet and muddy bush camp on the way to Göreme, where we pıtched our wet tents for a 3-nıght stop.
Göreme ıs set ın a valley and our campsıte was on the hıllsıde overlookıng ıt. Most people’s hıghlıght here was hot-aır balloonıng over the fantastıc lunar landscape wıth a 4.30am start. We opted out havıng experıenced balloonıng before and because ıt was very expensıve. (Not to mentıon the 4.30 start !) The area ıs also fantastıc as there are thousands of rock-cut dwellıngs and churches many of whıch we vısıted at the Göreme open air museum . Many of the churches whıch date back to the 10th century contaın wonderfully - preserved frescoes .
We also dıd a full day tour of the varıous volcanıc rock formatıons ıncludıng the faıry chımneys. And an underground cıty ın whıch up to 10000 people lıved.
My bırthday was made very specıal by a lot of people. And was stıll beıng celebrated the day after when we went out for a Turkısh nıght whıch ıncluded a Turkısh meal and entertaınment ın the form of whırlıng dervıshes and belly dancers. A good nıght out.
Ady and I decıded to stay ın the area for a couple of nıghts bed and breakfast as the thought of 3 more nıghts bush campıng ın the cold and wet was not appeallıng so we are now ın the pretty lıttle town of Ürgüp and wıll hopefully catch up wıth the others before they cross the border ınto Iran. Or we wıll have problems!
So tıll next tıme ……..

May 2nd, 2008Still in Turkey
May 2nd, 2008We left Istanbul on 23 April with clean clothes and bodies after laundry and turkish baths _ having also visited the Blue Mosque which was vast & impressive and very blue inside but not as blue as the postcards! We also visited Aya Sofya _ a church built in the 6th century _ originally christian but taken over by muslims in1453 _ a truly great building filled with mosaics _ beautiful painted ceilings and murals _ now a museum as the muslim faith does not allow any worship of idols.
On to Gallipoli for Anzac Day on 25th April _ the day commemorating the Turkish success at the end of WW1 against the Allied Forces of Australia New Zealand Britain France and India. There was a dawn service at 5.30 am . We toured the Gallipoli peninsula looking at the graves and all the touching memorials to all the young men from all nationalities who had died . It was very moving.
Next day we crossed the Dardanelles by ferry into Asia. We visited the ruins of ancient Troy and the next day the breathtaking ruins of Ephesus. Ephesus was spectacular and really gave a feel as to what life was like in Roman times.
The weather was cold and wet for several days _ not at all what we had expected in S W Turkey. Our beach day was particularly bad on 28th April_ no more than a cold wet walk on the beach and trying to light and cook on a camp fire _ not really much fun _ especially as it was my turn to cook.
Sunshine the next day at Pamukkale where we climbed on beautiful natural calcium carbonate shelves with water cascading down. It was so brilliantly white I could not keep my eyes open.
We are now in a holiday resort called Oludeniz near Fettiye. It is still pre_ season so not too busy and is a beautiful spot. We took another Turkish bath on Wednesday _ yesterday I walked for 5 hours while Ady ( on cook duty ) cooked a whole lamb on a spit and today we have been horse riding . Tomorrow we leave to go yet further round the coast to Olympos.
Till next next ……
