Moving on

Today is December 8th. I arrived in Brunei on November 17th. I think it is time to move on. If I were to stay longer, it would only mean that my DVD collection would grow to a size that would...

Top Tips for Hashers, Brunei Edition, page 3

From the BH3 newsletter, run number two thousand one hundred and twenty seven: "Don't panic if chased by a crocodile. Simply run in a zig-zag fashion. These large reptiles are only able to run in straight lines, and will be...

Christmas at the Ambassador's

Last night we went to the Philippino High Commissioner's Christmas party. Most of the attendees were dressed in red and wore santa hats. The Ambassador herself was dressed seasonally; turned out to be a very nice lady. I mixed and...

Golfing at the Royal course, eating at the Empire

Getting a little behind here. Continuing after the hash on Wednesday last week... On Thursday Vijen took me golfing after work. This morning, like many before it, I spend watching DVD's drinking Nescafe 3-in-1 instant coffee. Vijen and Lorrie's housekeeper...

A new word

I have added a new word to my vocabulary. Palatial is the only word that can be used to describe some of the homes around Brunei. I have never needed to use this adjective before coming here......

Lazy days, punctuated by Hash

Unlike my former counterpart, Andrew, I have not been doing much. I certainly have not been too busy to post an entry here or there, but the fact of the matter is that I simply haven't done anything of great...

Why I do not like Brunei

1. It is tremendously hot. 2. The local Bruneians mistreat the immigrant workers, paying them ridiculously low wages. 3. Everyone gets automobile subidies from the govmt. and so everyone here drives. Therefore the bus system is poor, backpackers beware. 4....

Why I like Brunei

1. You do not need to carry toilet paper everywhere you go. 2. You do not need to wear a money belt, an article of "clothing" that has become very smelly and dirty. (Maybe I should launder it?) 3. There...

Glittering gold, blinding me as a stare at the largest palace in the world, owned by one of the richest men in the world, knowing that hidden in a glimmering parking lot underground there rest 200 undriven ferraris

Here I am in Brunei. Until this time I have been a rich westerner, a fact I have become accustomed to. Now I am virtually the poorest in the small country....
