February 03, 2005KLIA, one last time
This is the last Malaysia entry. Sad, because I love Malaysia. I arrived around 1:30, passing Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and heading on to the downtown Pudrajaya bus station. We arrived in the heavy and thick heat of the mid day, the inland setting of KL making for one of the hottest days so far on my trip. I set off up the vaguely-familiar street, past the Anju Hostel where Drew and I slept for a few hours back in November. I recall that hostel being one of the worst on my trip... I found the air-con internet 'cafe' which I visited once before and attended to a few things. I had planned to make a pass by the popular Petaling Street, a pedestrian shopping haven in Chinatown, but as time ticked away in the internet booth I became a bit concerned about time and ditched the sightseeing plan. See, someone, perhaps anticipating a massive expansion of the city of KL, built KLIA about 70km's from the downtown. That means travelers have to set out for the airport about 4 hours before the flight to arrive the proscribed 2h before international flights. I didn't have time to take the bus, so opted for the more expensive (35RM!) KLIA Ekpres. In the KL Sentral Station's basement I found myself in what seemed to be the lobby of an airport. Malaysia Airlines checkin counters would confirm your seat and checkin your baggage. I walked past the duty-free shops and high-priced restaurants in the magnificent building and boarded the next train. 28 minutes later I was in KLIA, checked in with AirAsia (whom I have forgiven) and ate a quick meal of Malay food. Ah - it warms my decrepit heart whenever travellers feel the love for Malaysia. Unlike this other bootsnaller who said very silly, misinformed things about Malaysia, whom I shall not mention... Glad to have met you, Erik. Thanks again for the tarsier postcard - love it! Posted by: cayce on February 3, 2005 03:17 PMWho said silly misinformed things about M'sia? Was it me? I hope not...
