November 07, 2004Bye Bye Phi Phi
Today we were up early hoping to take a tour of the nearby Phi Phi Lay island before we all departed ways on separate ferries. We were all tardy (on-time by thai standards though) but still managed to negotiate a longtail boat tour for a decent price. Our destination: The Beach! The place where they filmed the legendary movie is a national park protected from development, though apparently the thais collect swallows nests for soup or something. we all hopped in the boat with our bags and set off for the distant island. The islands around Krabi province are shear limestone cliffs reaching high into the sky; good rock climbing i'm told. The rock also erodes well in water and has created a number of caves near the water line - too bad we don't have time to explore. We ventured around the small island and into the bay. quite a sight! The shallow blue water, parrotfish visible from the boat, snorkellers swimming about. The scene wasn't quite right out of the film, but was pretty spectacular. We toured around the rest of the island, dipping into some very remote lagoons and bays before arriving on Phi Phi Don pier. Andrew, Fletcher and I bought tickets to Krabi, where we will try to find a bus or train to Malaysia tonight. Comments
