September 11, 2004Home Sweet Home
Well after gassing up ($50!!!), I left Burnaby at 5:30 this morning . Nice thing about predawn driving is the open road and the lack of law enforcement; or so i thought! Turns out Vancouver is bustling at that time of the morning. A real surprise since my frequent 4:30am drives to work are eerily quiet. Usually reminiscent of 28 Days Later... Nevertheless I got off to a great start and the flow of traffic heading east was swift. I lost radio contact with the lower mainland sometime just after sunrise, and arrived in Kamloops just after 8am. Mom, please don't do the math on that one, I swear I didn't speed:) I hung out with little sister, who was rudely awoken. Luckily big brother bought her a chai tea at SBUX to make up for it. (Stef, why do all the SBUX cups leak? You know where the seam is. Hot liquid always pours onto my hand. I do not like it.) We visited for awhile, then I headed back to the dorms, met the boyfriend, and headed off around 10:30. I zoomed off towards Revelstoke, and realizied that I'd miss the ferry if I didn't quicken the pace... Nice thing about the Kootenays is the relative absence of policing officals, and this particular stretch leading to the Galena Bay ferry is straight, fast, and barren. I made it to the ferry landing by 1, just as they started to load, but I'll be damned if I wasn't the third car to be denied passage! And it's an hour wait for the next one! (Didn't you know that the kootenays had ferries? no, not faeries, but they are all Free.) I started to walk over towards the bathroom for some relief (Lauren, I was all set to take a picture for you, trinidad style) when I heard my name being called. That's another thing that happens a lot in the Kootenays, everyone seems to know one another. You'll drive down the highway and people will wave, people will call to you in the street, you will run into classmates on the ferry, you'll shoot the shit with your grade two teacher at the only bar in town... Anyways, it was my Aunt and Uncle, who, by some crazy coincidence were on their way to visit New Denver a day ahead of schedule. We had lunch in their fifth-wheel and boarded the 2'o'clock faerie. I zipped past them and met my old sister in Nakusp before I arrived in New Denver at 4:30. As Andrew pointed out in one of his 3 frantic emails, only five sleeps to go! Over and Out. that is all.
