May 04, 2004Welcome to the Northern Terrritory
with my last beer in Boulia i learned about being pissed on. i hear that the Vancouver Canucks (our hockey team) was doing really well but were knocked out of the playoffs (???). too bad, but did you really expect them to win? which reminds me of a guy i met in brissy when i first arrived. a fellow vancouverite, seemed nauice enough so we went for coffee (of course it was starbucks). during coffee noticed that he had a missing tooth in front...i asked if he played hockey...of course he did...he's canadian. went into the pub in Boulia for my last drinky drink before i left. was waiting for the bus to pick me up. met some nauice locals there. a bloke started a yarn with me and was even nauice enough to buy this little sheila a Gold beer. i learn something new everyday and that day in the pub i found out that sandflies don't 'bite' you but instead they pee on you. that pee is what makes you itchy and i reckon the pee from those damn sandflies hurts more than a mossie bite. if you wash it off before you scratch it then it's okay...where was he when i got pissed on??? got picked up by the bus tour. stayed at a cattle station just outside of town. a couple of the guys had guitars so they provided the entertainment for the night. it felt so good to have a proper home cooked meal for the first time in a month. some nauice ppl on the tour...quite a few photographers too!! of course there was the token american that tried to have an arguement with the lady that owns the cattle station about aussie beef. this woman has lived on this stn her whole life and knows all there is to know aboot buying and selling cattle and i reckon she would know what type is the best....but noooooooo this city boy american had to argue with her. i just walked away nodding my head. walked to the next state, the northern territory. okay so the busdriver just stopped the bus prior to the border and we walked for 5 mins in the new state. there was a sign saying "Welcome to the Northern Terrritory" - another aussie spelling boo boo. stopped at an aboriginal community, Atitjere. found out that there are 'wet camps' and 'dry camps'. this one as a dry camp where they do not allow alcohol. it's a decision made by the leader of the camp. i reckon this is a great idea cuz apparently some of the aboriginals live in the 'now' and they will end up spending all their money on alcohol and not bother worrying about food or other important things. gotta run...if anyone is reading this..please send an email. i'd love to hear from you.
