June 26, 2004Savage Craic, Bloody Mad Lads and Just Good Clean Fun
Well, when I made it back to my room yesterday, I was greated by a gaggle of Irish girls. They were getting ready for the Bryan Adams concert. They were so hilarious, running around, getting their hair straightened and make-up done for their night out. I found out that they had all just finished school on Thursday. In fact, they had just finished their exams which will determine if they go on with their education at the University Level. They said they were going bloody mad after two weeks of exams and were just excited to be out of Wexford! We sat around while they were getting ready and had the craic, some savage craic. You may be wondering what craic is. It's pronounced "crack", and no it's not drugs. It is the Irish word for conversation, good times, fun. When you meet people here, they will ask how the craic is, or if you mention going to a pub, they ask you about the craic. They will also tell you which places have the best craic. If the crack is exceptional, you say it is savage craic, or bloody good craic. Craic here is good. In America, Crack is bad. In America, we need more craic and less crack. Enough about the craic. All this talk about craic is making me whack! Well, after having some savage craic with my new mad lads, I sent them off to see Bryan Adams. I spent the night writing and even managed to get to the grocery store. I have been trying to take it easy, making the most of the end of my time here before I get back to Indy. One thing I have noticed here is at the grocery store, they don't have some of my favorite foods. When I got sick, I really wanted Chicken Noodle Soup and Saltines. No go here. I did see Chicken Noodle Soup last night at Tesco, but not a box of saltines. Now, my hankering of soup is gone, so I didn't buy any. I did buy peanut butter and jelly because I know you can' t get sick from pb&j. I am still leary of food. I went on a search for mac and cheese. I really wanted some Easy Mac. They don't have that here. They didn't even know what I was talking about. Man, what would life be like without mac and cheese? I seriously think the US needs to send boxs of Kraft Mac and Cheese here for the Irish, because Mac and Cheese is savage and bloody tasty! They could have some savage craic about mac and cheese. I had a pb&j sandwich this morning for breakfast. It wasn't like Jif, or my favorite, Wal-Mart Brand Real Value (which is like Jif), but it was a breakfast and it filled my belly up. I plan on taking my pb&j with me when I leave Killarney, because I just want to. Peanut Butter here is still in glass jars. I don't think I have seen that in America since I was a child. I have to say good luck to Eileen now. She is competing in Cincinnati on Sunday at the Irish Dance Feis. Kick high girl, step lightly and go for the first! I haven't forgotten about Dippin' Dots on July 12! I'll be there in spirit! I will update on Monday. Can you believe that I come home on Wednesday? I can't. I am really missing home now and can't wait to sleep in my own bed. Keep those emails coming! Missing you all, can't wait to see you! We will have some savage craic!
