Takeo

I woke up hungover suprise suprise. I had decided to volunteer in a school south of Phnom Penh where the kids couldn’t afford to go to school (they have to pay in Cambodia). So I went to call the guy who organised things Mr Heng Chum. I was planning on getting the bus down to Takeo tomorrow and wanted to ask directions to get to the village from there. It turned out he was in Phnon Penh and he said he’d meet me at my guesthouse. When he arrived an hour later he just said ‘ ready to go?’ I thought it best to go with him and quickly packed my bags. We arrived in a small village at 4pm. Mr Chum quickly showed me where I would sleep, a stilt house with a mat on the floor and a mosquito net, then he left – I never saw him again. I literally put my bags down and was taken by motorbike to a school to teach my first lesson! The kids were all waiting outside when I got there. I didn’t have a clue what to do – I had never taught a lesson in my life! I just had to get on with it and started to write the alphabet on the board, the kids sat down and we recited the alphabet together, they were obviously more advanced than this so I spent the hour teaching them items of clothing and colours! I was so nervous. There was boys of about 7 years old swinging of the shutters on the windows and young girls were sat there with crying babies on the knees, it was crazy and I was so nervous I was shaking! The class was such a mixed age group too, from babies to 25 year olds! I’m not sure how I got through the hour. We went back to the house, a family lived next door I wasn’t sure if it was Mr Chums family, I never found out. I paid them $3 a day for food and lodgings. Under their stilt house was a small class room. When I got back it was time for dinner, vegetable curry and rice. Another girl had arrived, Fiona, from Newcastle. I was so relived! We had another lesson next door at 6.30 for an hour. This was much better as we could bounce ideas off each other and took the class together. These kids were well behaved and all the same age, around 11 or 12 and their english was amazing. I fell alseep about 10pm nervus of what tomorrow may bring.
