Journey to Ko Chang

My plan was to head for Kanchanaburi next but at breakfast my plans did a flip. The guy I had met from Boots n all, Owen, told me he was heading to Ko Chang tonight with some friends of his cousins who live in Bangkok-gonna go with them. Owen headed for the snake farm and I sought some fresh air and a break from the heat and fumes in a little piece of paradise in Bangkok - Lumpini Park.

At 10.30pm we boarded the bus to Trat (near to the Cambodian border). It took 5 hours to get there. Trat at 3.30am is a scary looking place. I was glad we were with Sitti, Weena and Ohm. Weena and Ohm are originally from Chang Mai but they live in Bangkok. A night market was open and in my tired state it looked like everyone was zombies walking around. Ohm went to get us some Thai food from the market to try and came back with lots of unusual things.
I realised at this point I was a long way from home....
We found out that there was a boat at 5am and got a sawngthaew to the pier. A sawngthaew (pronounced songtao) is a pick-up that are used as taxis. 'Sawng' is two and 'thaew' are the benches that run along the back. The boat took around an hour to reach Ko Chang and as the sun was rising you could make out the mountains on the island.
