May 03, 2005The only disco I have ever liked: the Pell-Mell
If you go along the road from Gavrion to Batsi, you will pass several beautiful beaches. Lying right up against the road and on one of the beaches you will see the hulk of a white building that was once the Pell-Mell. The Pell Mell, bizarrely, took over occupancy of a building that had once been a fish restaurant. It was a small, intimate disco, but the real reason everyone used to flock here was because after dancing (extremely badly) for a while, you could whip out onto the beach, fling off your clothes, and go for a skinny-dip. When you had returned onto the beach and had re-acquainted yourself with your clothes, there was often a waiting table with a watermelon which had been filled with Pimms no.1 (a British gin-based drink), and straws had been punched into it. You selected a straw, sipped, and the water-melon-Pimms slipped down your throat. Comments
