Valentino and his magic scissors

After a short local bus ride out of Brasilia, Monica and I arrived in Gama, a small and simple town full of half built houses and kids playing soccer in the street. This was definitely off the “Gringo Trail”…

We got directions to the place where Valentino does his daily healings. My legs started to go tingly as we approached which I took as a sign that we were entering a powerful place. Either that or my shoelaces were way too tight.
For the skeptics, it was definitely the shoelaces.

I just went to observe, but I ended up in a big line with about 100 other people. Turns out it was the line for surgery. My first urge was to get out of the line but Monica urged me to stay on. It couldn’t hurt I guess. Before I knew it I was being led into the big surgery room and instructed to lay down on one of the beds. Valentino was going round to each bed in turn and doing his stuff. Before I knew it he was at my bed with a big pair of scissors! I was just here to observe but somehow, before I knew it I had ended up on one of the operating tables with Valentino ready to do god knows what with those scissors. I knew it would be fine though. He looked very kind and gentle.

One of the nurses came over and joined Valentino at my bedside. She said something to me in Portuguese, and at this early stage my Portuguese was still at Marcel Marceaux levels. “What are you here for” She then asked. “That’s a bloody good question.” came my instant reply. “Just a checkup then” the nurse smiled. I had a bit of a giggle, I was at a psychic surgeon for a checkup. It was a very funny concept indeed.

Valentino told me to sit up. He lifted up my shirt, went to my back and did some swift scissor movements made a bit of a “snip snip” sound a few times and he was done. My lower back was sore from the endless bus trips. He then pointed at my left big toe. The nurse said “He says your toe hurts”. Old Valentino was spot on, I had stepped on a spikey plant 6 weeks ago in Argentina and it was still really sore. It was now time for the big toe to get a bit of the old snip snip treatment. Really he was just snipping in thin air, near the toe, cutting the pain and infection out of my energy field.

Valentino only saw me for two minutes or so, but I wasn’t charged any money. noone is. I reckon about 300 people went through in the morning I was there. There were some very sick people there, some of which looked like they were there as their last hope. Apparently, like his mate João de Deus (John of God) two hours down the road in Abadiania he sorts most of them out. Sound unbelievable?, well that’s why I came here, to see for myself if these guys were really doing it, even though in my heart I was already sure they did. Admittedly a day with Valentino was not really enough time to observe his efficacy but after 6 weeks of pain my left big toe healed within two days.

My trip to Valentino, as interesting as it was came with some take-away rules that I had to follow. They were:

- No pork (easy)
- No Spicy Food (relatively easy)
- No rising of sexual energy for 8 days (In Brasil?)

Not even one sexual thought for 8 days! That would be tough. It was something about holding all of your energy during the healing process. I should have thought myself lucky because João de Deus had the much stiffer “40 day rule”.

After seeing Valentino in action for the day I headed back to Brasilia’s immense bus station for a bus to Abadiania to see João de Deus. I had been waiting for this moment for 4 years.
