João de Deus is most famous for his healing miracles such as pulling people out of wheelchairs (and not leaving them lying on the floor as some people like to joke when I say that!). In the 43 years that the Casa has been running, he has assisted in the cure of thousands of Cancer cases and many cases of AIDS. Miracles do happen at the Casa, I witnessed a few myself. I saw a person come out of a wheelchair when I was there. I was part of the “current” that day, I heard João (in entity) say “vamos andar” (let’s walk), I snuck an eye open, I saw her get up and walk. I heard the shreiks of delight. A friend of mine that I met in Abadiania, said in the 8 months he had been there he had seen about 40 such occurences. So, perhaps, in terms of instant healing miracles João and the entities of the Casa are running at a few a week.

After a few days of solitude and settling in, it was finally Wednesday. Today was a “Casa Day” which meant that João was there, at the Casa de Dom Inacio, ready and waiting to attend to whoever turned up. Abadiania legend has it that sometimes there were over 1000 people lined up and João didn’t leave until he had seen all of them. Sometimes staying late into the night.

I was off to the first healing session of the day. The 8am session. It was a bright sunny day and dressed in my new white clothes I joined the river of white flowing towards the Casa. Many had to be wheeled or helped in some way and judging by the languages and accents being spoken some had come from a long way away.
