February 22, 2005La cuidad Heredia
Thank you for all of your comments. I feel very cared for by all of you. Like I said in my other entry, I am living in Heredia for the time being. Right now I am in an interet cafe about 10 blocks from the school. Heredia is different that I thought it would be. I pictured the streets wider than they are-- they are mostly, at least downtown, one way streets and fairly narrow. The cars do not stop for pedestrians, so you have to be very careful when crossing the street! Look many times! The cars drive fast, but it is not too bad. When we first got here, they told us to look at the roads and sidewalks while walking on them because there are sometimes holes in the ground and you have to look out for them. The largest holes are next to the curb and in all the streets there are large ditches (maybe about a foot deep) on both sides of the road. The curbs are marked with a yellow paint. The buildings are mainly succo and have metal roofs, but I will need to look around a little bit more to give a thorough description. All of the houses have gates in front to keep out those who would commit theft. The cars are mainly Japanese--Nissans, Hondas, Mazdas. I would think that there are some American cars here, but I haven´t seen any yet. There are many tiendas de ropa (clothing stores) that are similar to J. Silver, only smaller. They have stores that sell American clothes, por ejempo, one store had hip hop music playing and a baseball-type jersey for North Corolina Tarheels in the window. There are two parks in Heredia. One is Parque Los Angles and the other one is Parque Central. Parque Central the larger of the two. In both parks, there are Catholic churches and in el parque central, there is one of the oldest buildings (I think) in Costa Rica. It is a church that was built in 1797 and it is fairly large. There are lots of palm trees (palmeras) and flowering trees and benches to sit on. Today, a friend of mine from Motreal and I sat in the sun and practiced our Spanish. There are 2 or 3 volcanoes surrounding Heredia and one other mountain, I think. They are very beautiful and in my house here there is a very good view of one of the volcanoes from their front porch. I have to go now, my time is up, but I will write more later. Comments
