January 22, 2005Tapas y Mahau!!
AHHHH, Me encanta Madrid. I feel more at home here than anywhere. Its amazing how much i actually remember this city from March. My hostal is in an awesome place, and I remember how to walk everywhere. I´m a block away from the Puerta del sol. Perfect center location. I´m stayin at an awesome hostal, the food is amazing as usual, and the drink is flowing endlessly; however, I wish the company was a little better. I met my college group on friday after a short flight from Heathrow to Barajas. (drinks are free on BA continental flights!!!!) So I arrived at a comfortable time of 3.00 pm and took the metro from barajas to Mar de Cristal, To Goya, to Sevilla. After that little trip, my freakin shoulders were killing me from schleping my bags around town. And it didn´t get much better after that. My group is alright, but i can tell that there are kids here that are going to annoy the living hell out of me after being with them for four months. Its a pain, but i´ve come to expect being with jackasses on these group trips. I´m making an effort to be friendly, truely I am, but all there interests lie in getting free drinks and puking the night away. I´ve learned my lessons with that type of college drinking. So I´ve been sort of wandering the streets, meeting locals, eating some awesome food, drinking some awesome drink (Mahau is the local cheap beer...ahhhh), just taking everything in. From my random walks around the city, I´ve noticed some things that I seemed to have forgotten or not noticed last time I was here. Number one, I´ve noticed that Spaniards like to talk at a rate of speek that will make your eardrums bleed. Today I went to El Corte Inglés to buy a mobile phone for the rest of my trip. The sales guy that sold me my phone could of been an actuioneer as well. Even though my spanish is getting better by the day, ( I can pass for a mexican, or a columbian now!!) I couldn´t understand half the stuff he was telling me. So far, i´ve been avoiding my group. This way forces me to meet locals. The people here are awesome, and they have awesome tastes in music! Too bad I´m leaving for school tomorow. It always seems to work that way when I´ve gotten accuustomed to the place, then I have to leave. Well, tomorow I meet my spanish family in Salamanca. It should be nice to finnaly settle in and get into some sort of routine. I have placement exams on monday, and then after that I have classes everyday. I just learned that weekends are free for travel, so I think that I´m going to pay portugal many, many weekend visits! Well, its early here, and the sangria is calling my name.

You're safe at last in Spain! Needless to say, I'm frightfully happy for you. I know you'll meet such facinating people and make the most of this opportunity. Sorry about the boozers on your trip; as we've both experienced, you do meet some duds on international expeditions. Write often, for I must live vicariously through you. Take care.
