El Tajin, MX

pyramid_tajin-medium.JPG

We spent the afternoon wandering the ruins at El Tajin. (then spent the night in their field) A Mayan city from 800 - 1150AD, much of the site is still un-excavated, but the temples and living quarters are impressive. This pyramid has a step for each day of the year and inscriptions leading scholars to think it was used as a calendar for religious ceremonies. There are 20 buildings that have been partially renovated. The stonework is pretty impressive as is the high valley that the whole site sits in.
Below are the voladores who swing down from the tower with ropes around their waists. This local custom is not for the faint of heart!

Well, hanging upside down looks like fun!! (Not). And can you imagine washing all windows if they had glass… just kidding. How lucky to not only see all this, but to camp right by it. Hope you continue to have wonderful weather, sights, etc. Joey and I send love. He’d put his paw here, but he’s sleeping AGAIN… Sidney
