camel in Dahab, Egypt
One of the foul beasts in Dahab, Egypt!

I have been getting a load of responses to my Egypt story that I submitted to the Roadjunky 2007 Writing Contest. I made the top 10, but we’ll see where it goes from there. They announce the winners on August 1st.

Thanks for all the comments!

Aiming for Alaska

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Alaska by Greg Rodgers

Alaska is our largest state and it would take years to explore all the treasures this magical place has to throw at you. Last year I spent 3 of the most amazing weeks of my life there and I think I left a little piece of my heart in the cold ground when I left.

I leave on Monday, but unfortunately this time around I only have 8 days. I am traveling with my father, an avid outdoorsman, and it has been his childhood dream to go to Alaska. I can’t wait to see the look on his face when we land. :)

This is our loose plan for the trip:

- 2 day float fishing trip through God’s country followed by camping
- Lots of hiking and walking
- Staying in an old trapper cabin on a remote lake
- Explore Anchorage, hang out with my friends up there.
- Drive up to Denali park to Mt. McKinley
- Stay at Tangle Lake and do some fishing in the north

Last but not least, GET A PICTURE OF A BEAR! I diligently hunted bears (almost to the point of stupidity) last year and never encountered one. I did find the remains of salmon a grizzly was eating by the river before he bailed out, but close only counts with hand grenades. :)

It’s here!

I almost broke my legs getting to the door fast enough. Standing there in the July sunshine, looking like an angel, was the FedEx woman with an envelope for me. I already knew what was inside, but I tore into ... [Continue reading this entry]

blog problem

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007
OK, for whatever reason, my Cumberland Falls entry has eaten several of my older entries and things are jumbled up. It is obviously some kind of database problem, but now the trick is getting it fixed! Not a good thing as ... [Continue reading this entry]

Shot-o’clock

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007
Shot O'clock is the time in the pub when people get stupid enough to start doing regretful things to their livers in very small glasses. My shot-o'clock is tomorrow at 14:00 in the afternoon. Not the kind that comes from ... [Continue reading this entry]

Cumberland Falls

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007
In between travels, I try to keep busy around my area with almost-free adventures like hiking, fishing, climbing, or whatever else I can use to keep myself from the evil allure of electronic thingies. On Sunday I took a road ... [Continue reading this entry]

Aero-what?

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007
There is no better (or nervous) feeling than pulling the trigger on a $700 one-way flight to China. I am flying from London to China so I had to use AeroFlot, a Russian airline, and I will be connecting through ... [Continue reading this entry]

China visa

Monday, July 16th, 2007
I found out today that the Chinese consulate offices are very backed up, they say due to the 2008 Olympics going to Beijing, but I would bet that rampant red tape and Communist bureaucracy might have a little something to ... [Continue reading this entry]

So close…

Monday, July 16th, 2007
I am so close to getting back on the road again that I can almost smell the pollution from tuk-tuks and the frying oil in woks from the street vendors. The rest of 2007 for me: Where: Alaska When: 30-July-07 Why: Fishing, fishing, hunting ... [Continue reading this entry]
