October 05, 2005Oktoberfest
Here are my pics from the trip to Oktoberfest. It flew bye and was a great time. Awesome to see my sister Lauren, Chris, and Brandon after traveling solo for 4 months. We started off with 4 days in Prague, Czech Republic. My third visit to Prague was excellent. The end of September is a great time to visit as most of the tourists have left town, the temp. is good at around 70F, and the leaves are changing color. Here are my pics from when I was in Czech. in June as well. From Prague we went on to Salzburg, Austria. Salzburg is as picturesque as any city in the world, almost too much so. It is as clean, well manicured, and practically sterile as can possibly be. Unfortunately for us it rained for our two days there but we still managed to visit the beautiful castle and walk around town a bit. From Salzburg we headed to Munich for the reason behind the trip to Europe, Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is a two week long party/fair that goes at the end of September. It began 200 years ago as a celebration of a princes wedding and has turned into the biggest festival in the world, with more then 6 million visitors and over 12 million pints of beer consumed. There are 14 enormous beer tents holding thousands of people along with dozens of rides, food stands, a ferris wheel and multiple roaller coasters. They serve beer by the liter which is about two pints, or three cans of beer in one glass. Each tent has it's own band playing traditional Bavarian music along with standard favorites around the world. We spend 3 days at Oktoberfest and drank enough (me and Chris did anyways) for the entire month. It was a lot of fun to go from tent to tent, trying to jam yourself in with all the others. Most table space is reserved ahead of time so it basically leaves you standing inside, hopefully on top of a seat if you find a good spot and made some friends. Outside the seating is more open but it was a bit cool and sometimes wet as well. You spend most of your time singing along with everyone, people watching, and meeting all sorts from around the globe all the while holding an enormous mug of tasty goodness. Of course there is excellent eating to be had as well, as long as you like chicken, pretzels, sausage, and more sausage. "Ein Mass Bier Bitte!!!!"........"Danke Schon" Comments
