Faith in Edmontonian Kindness Slighty Restored

The weather is a little crappy these past couple of days. Heavy snowfall warning for 3 days straight and at least 10cm snow for 3 days. The snow is the wet, heavy, sticks to everything kind of snow which is good for building snowmen/forts but not good for driving in because you get your wheel wells full of snow which makes turning difficult. Also, the city is having difficulty keeping up with street clearing because the snow just keeps falling and it just gets blown back onto the street from the windrows.

Now in these conditions there are plenty of rude, inconsiderate, crazy people who think because they drive a large truck, they can drive faster than conditions allow. You can see plenty of people with hazard lights flashing on the side of the road, or in some cases, the middle of the lane.

In addition, the snow can get as deep as mid calf in some places and if you have a car, you might have a bit of trouble getting through without getting stuck. I almost got stuck 2 times im my neighbourhood in my car. Usually, in these situations, you just need some patience and rock your vehicle back and forth until you manage to pop yourself out of the rut in the snow. Sometimes you need a push but for the most part, it’s a skill to rock your car out.

Today I was meeting Adam for lunch downtown. When I walked to the restaurant, I saw him stuck in a drift while trying to park. I ran over and proceeded to push from the rear while he was doing the rocking. While I was unsucessfully pushing(I was wearing heeled boots. Not good for pushing vehicles out!), a guy who was walking by asked if we needed help and joined in. Then another minute later, another man silently came up to push as well.

We got the vehicle out and I thanked the two guys who just turned and dissappeared down the street where they came. It made me feel happy. The city and it’s people sometimes surprise you.

Now I don’t know if they volunteered because they saw a little Chinese lady pushing a truck by herself or if they would have done it anyways but I like to think that they would anyways.

    Hi,
I had a similar situation with my grocery cart yesterday!. I was having a difficult time pusing it through the parking lot when two men came and pushed it to my car. They told me to have a good day and thne they were on there way.

that’s pretty great Cathy! It’s better than what I remember coming back from Australia and going grocery shopping for the first time back in Edmonton. Got pushed and bumped around by people trying to pass with no apologies or aknowledgement that they’ve noticed. People should say sorry!

    It was Superstore but still…

My favorite was on whyte ave. A guy in a motorized wheelchair was stuck in the snow halfway off the cross walk and up the ramp to the sidewalk. The guy in front of me stopped (in the driving lane) and got out and pushed the guy’s wheelchair out and then ran back to his car and drove away.
