Prairie Thunderstorms

Monday, July 30th, 2007

I love night time prairie thunderstorms. You get to watch the lightning dance across the sky and hear the thunder rolling as you watch the dark clouds approach from afar. It only seems to rain at night so you get to enjoy your hot, humid summer day and as you are getting ready for bed the outside air cools right down with the cloud cover. Leaving the window open, you get to hear the rainfall and cool your house/bedroom as you fall asleep.

Ghost Tour of Strathcona

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Last night Adam and I went on a Ghost Tour with LeAnna and her bf (collegue from work). This week is Historic Edmonton Week. Very overshadowed by the Capital Ex, but is way cheaper (only $5.00) and cooler than a bunch of carny rides/games.

The lady who lead our group of about 34 people (including 3 Italian backpackers; 2 of whom didn’t speak english the 3rd had to translate) around Old Strathcona, stopping at some of the very old buildings and telling us about murders and ghosts and one of the oldest mysteries in Scona history. The one I remember most is the ghost of a Lady of the Night who was murdered after a business transaction in the oldest hotel in the area, Strathcona Hotel. (very original name, eh?) After 3 days, the murderer chopped up her body, put them in large suitcases and threw her in the river. To this day he’s still behind bars and Room 16 is haunted by her spirit. The shower turns on by itself, closet doors open and close for no apparent reason. People wake up to the feeling of someone staring at them, Jump out of bed when they see a woman with curly hair at the foot of the bed and find no one in the room. Creepy!

About midway through the tour, a couple of local characters started following us and harassing our group. Some might say this is part of the charm of Old Strathcona. Our guide did really well at handling the situation but in the end, we needed to end the tour a little early.
