Sharples Motocross Race

Monday, April 30th, 2007

This past weekend I went to watch Adam at the first Hare Scramble(through the trees) race of the season near Pincher Creek. We spent Saturday at the WildRose Motocross Association’s Blackfoot Motorcycle Park so he could practice and adjust his settings. Sunday we drove 2 more hours south to the Sharples Race. It was fun to watch the start (start was about 2km down from the parking/pit) as riders went over a steep embankment, a hairpin turn around a tree before riding up the hill and disappearing into the trees. I was “Pit Crew” (I gave myself that name :D) The pic is Adam catching up and eventually passing this guy.
Sharples Race
I was suprised to see that they were very disorganized. They did not have large signs so if you were going for the first time, you wouldn’t have known where to turn off the highway. Also, there were no outhouses. I had to go in the bush. ew. One friendly neighbour mom (kids raced yesterday) told me that some are more organized than others so you need to be self contained, just in case. Also, the start flagman left. The ladies class had yet to go… Basically, the ladies were yelling “Hey, where’s our start?” and everyone left watching just yelled “GO GO GO!” The flagman was already walking back to this truck. Talk about a Burn, eh?

Also, visited with Adam’s sister and my friend Rob.

My First Opera Experience

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Cathy managed to get free tickets to the Edmonton Opera for Verdi’s MacBeth. Last minute really. I picked Adam up from his house right afterwork and I realized I’d be going to the opera with sneakers… (I don’t do fancy shoes at work) Adam was gracious enough to wear his sneakers with his black slacks. At least we weren’t the most underdressed.

The first act I thought was quite slow and boring but I loved the staging, costumes and singing. I was very impressed by the way they made the stage look so different by shining different light patterns on the cloth to either make it look like castle walls, trees, etc. The second act was way more interesting to watch. I think that’s because the songs were a bit faster (maybe), shorter(definately less repeats of the same lines) and there were more scene changes.

To tell the truth, I didn’t stay for the whole thing. I left at the second intermission. If you want a full review I’m sure Ange and Dustin will be able to provide one since they were there too! Ange is a part of the Explorer’s Club which provides the opportunity for rush seats for people under 30 to experience opera.
