Wood

This morning, me and the head carpenter went to buy some wood for the woodshop, as we were running low. It was kind of an interesting experience shopping around at the different woodshops trying to find the best deal on dry wood, and haggling over a fair price.

Almost all the wood sold in Cusco is harvested from the nearby jungle, I can´t say one way or another if this is done in such a way that doesn´t destroy it. I would assume probably not. Anyway, I got a couple free delicious bananas out of the arrangement, and a somewhat unsettling ride back to the woodshop on top of a precariously piled woodstack in the back of a taxi that by all means shouldn´t have been able to carry the load. I gotta say though, I do love the taxi´s around here, you can ride almost anywhere for about 70 cents, or a dollar after 10pm. For some reason I´ve gotten cheap and refuse to pay more than 15 cents for transportation, so I take the bus.

Another thing that I may not have mentioned the astronomical number of dogs in Cusco. They´re everywhere. All different kinds, all different sizes. Some have homes, other çs are just hangin out. Its kind of funny to see a sidewalk crowded with people, and dags that also look like they have somewhere to be. Most are just sleeping or routing through trash for some food. Apparently the story is that the mutt dogs have gotten really smart, and when people buy them for the family, at a certain age they all just run away and live the streets. No one seems to do much about them, and they don´t seem to cause much problems. There certainly is no problem with stray cats in Cusco, which is nice.
