Get me out of here!

It was an early start from Xela. So early that our toilet in the hotel couldnīt cope and we were left with a bowlfull of, well, stuff. How do you explain that to the hotel manager when your Spanish is crap and their English is non-existent? We had no choice really, we left them in the proverbial and hoped they wouldnīt be too upset.

A car turned up from the tour company and we couldnīt get in fast enough – get us away from this embarrassing situation! Xela didnīt look any nicer on the way out.

After about half an hour we got to the main crossroads which was SO hectic. People, animals, trucks and buses all in one place. Organised chaos one might say. The tour minibus arrived, already half full, so we squeezed onto the back seat and were off.

Overall, the journey went quite quickly considering it took us from around 8am until lunchtime to get to the Guatemalan – Mexican border at Le Mesilla. We had a stop at some services along the way which was a welcome break – but clean loos and cheap food made a change from home! A lot of the journey was along windy roads climbing up steep mountainsides – and this was the main road

Going through the border was an interesting experience (see section on Bordering on the Ridiculous) and one we were glad to be out of!

Soon we were flying along the familiar roads of Mexico – youīll have to look at our section on that for now, until we return to Guatemala in a few days
