November 10, 2004Monkeys and Motorbikes
Well, last night was our last night with Fletcher (aka Darren) - he was off to do a trek up in the Cameron Highlands (Central Malaysia) while Erik and I decided to go to Langkawi Island for a night and before heading to Lake Toba in Sumatra. Alright, I have to mention this cause it was so random and I love random. The place we were at last night had a whole bunch of stuff written on the walls written by the many travelers that had stayed there. Well, there was one by "Adam" that went "Never push your Granny when she is shaving". Erik managed to get a picture of it. I don't know what it was but all three of us just cracked up reading that. Anyway, here's our last night out with Fletcher. I'm not quite sure why we came over to Langkowi, probably cause we had two days to kill before our ferry to Medan (it was booked up for 3 solid days as it is an Indonesian holiday period), but boy am I glad we came. This island is way bigger than I thought it would be, way more technologically advanced and developed than I thought, but it still has that small town feel. Kinda almost feels like a large Coombs except the goats are on the ground :) Anyway, Erik and I decided to rent motorbikes for the day and go exploring (yes mom and dad we had helmets and everything). This was really cool cause I have never ridden a bike before, but after a quick lesson from Erik, I got it down no problem. Here's Erik looking suave on his bike. So we're driving along (this island is perfect for it by the way, cause it's small enough that it's not too crowded, but big enough so you can spend the whole day exploring and the roads are well kept) and we see these Rhesus monkeys along the side of the road. So we pull over, and Erik walks up to get close enough to take a photo. Instead of scurrying away, the monkey actually comes up to Erik. After he gets a photo, the monkey starts hissing at him. Now, this is you typical idea of a cute monkey. Well, that is definately unfounded, this is about 2 seconds before he started being uncute. They had these huge teeth, that kinda looked like giant vampire fangs (hehehe, vampire monkeys). Needless to say, we got out of there ASAP. After that, we went up to a cable car that took us to the top of a mountain, that overlooks the island. This is the view from the cable car on the way up the mountain. There was also a beautiful water fall called Seven Wells that we could see from the car. As soon as you reached the platform, maybe about 10m before, the clouds rolled in and you could barely see a thing. Oh well, it was a nice ride up... After that we hoped on our bikes and headed to another waterfall a owner of a local restaurant had recommeded us. All the way along the path, there were lots of monkeys again, cept these ones weren't as aggressive, and were much more intent on grooming one another. The waterfall was gorgeous, View image. But we kinda just came, saw it and headed off. This is the Erik with one of them in the background. That's pretty much was our day, we went and bought some really cheap beer for this evening ($3.00 for a six pack of Calsberg that won't be opened til we get back to our hotel), and might hang out and play pool or something. TTYL, PS. I'm trying to put more pictures up with me entries now cause I know that makes things a little more interesting :P Comments
