November 09, 2004Penang
Hi Everyone, So I am no longer in Thailand and now am in the wonderful world of Malaysia. It seems pretty cool so far, you can definately notice the difference when you cross the border, the transportation infrastructure here is miles ahead of Thailand. The roads are supurb, and there are palm like trees everywhere. Erik, Darren and I are now in a place called Penang, it's a fairly large town on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. We were pretty knackered the first night we were here (after getting up at 7 for a 9 hour bus ride), so we just went out for dinner (delicious Indian food in the "Little India" section of Penang) and then hung out playing cards for a while. Today we went a checked out the mall just for the fun of it and to see what a Malaysian Mall is like. The first one we went to was pretty crap, if I could give you a comparison, I would say Harbour Park in Nanaimo. Right next to it was this fantastic one, just like a large one at home (with Starbucks and everything, no more discount eh Stef). Didn't buy anything, but we just used this as a starting point to get to a place called Penang Hill. It's a 821m hill on the outskirts of the city that you take a trolley car up to see. It's pretty elaborate up there (with some absolutely stunning house pretty much in the middle of nowhere). While we were there we went on a canopy walk that was 25 or so meters above the ground, pretty much right up in the tree tops (it did cost 30 cents to get on). When we were on it, we saw that biggest stick bug I have ever seen. I mean this thing was gigantic, I would say over half a foot, no exageration. Here are a couple of photos from the canopy...
