Beautiful Devon
Nic, Carly and I went to Devon for the long weekend in May. We went with the same company I went to Lake District with, and funnily enough, we ended up with the same tour guide, Dave…such a cool fellah.
Weather was a bit off, but we had a great time exploring Exeter, then up on to Dartmoor for cider tasting, caving, and a walk up a ‘Tor’. Plus we had some time in Dartmouth, visited Englands most haunted castle and even got to see a bunch of crazy people chase cheese down a hill in Gloucester.
Here it is in pictures…
Exeter
We stayed in a lovely B&B in Exeter for the entire trip. We spent Saturday morning exploring the city…

The remains of the Norman Castle built in 1068 by William the Conqueror.

A plaque in memory of the last women in Exeter to be executed as Witches in the 17th century.

Exeter Cathedral.

We headed to the Quay for a rest before heading back to the bus and up into Dartmoor national park.
Dartmoor
Our first stop was cider tasting. We got to see how ’scrumpy’ is made using a straw press and got to taste it. It was so gross! It left an after-taste in my mouth like off-cheese! I’ve decided I’m not a fan of scrumpy.

The original straw press, it’s hundreds of years old. This farm has been making scrumpy for about 400 years.

Taste-testing

Hound Tor (well in the back ground). This is where the legendary Hounds of the Baskervilles is set.

Our tour group

This is a clapper bridge. It is formed by large flat slabs of granite supported on stone piers.
Berry Pomeroy Castle
We went to Berry Pomeroy Castle - England’s most haunted castle - apparently… although I could have sworn I heard a woman scream when I was in the chapel…weird. It was quite spooky, and I loved the different architecture of the 13th and 15th centuries…

Dartmouth
We popped down to Dartmouth on Sunday before we went caving. We had a little bit of time here, but it was such a lovely sea-side town, I really want to go back and see it properly.

Caving

Aren’t we sexy! This is what we had to wear under our waterproof caving suits - we look like Telly-Tubbies!!
Gloucester

and last but not least, this is what it looks like when people attempt to run down a steep hill after a bit of cheese. Utter craziness!
Carlys blog has more detail of the weekend, and as I’m a slacker when it comes to the writing, I’m going to be lazy and tell you all to go visit here blog here.

Ash, we saw the cheese rolling on TV. Were wondering if it was the same one that you went to and it was. Look crazy.

Ahhh… good to see your Mum posted the other day, this way I don’t look like I sit around and wait for a blog just to write the first comment… which is the sad truth….nrnrGreat adventure and I, like your Mum saw this on the news the other week also. Can’t say it is my cup of tea, but there a few things funnier in life than people falling over. Well perhaps fart jokes but they lose their impact over the net…nrnrAnother great blog and don’t listen to jacqui. Update the blog as much as you can. The sacrifice of one for the greater good of many…
