The occasional traveller

As planned we went to the wonderful French restaurant in Xian called La Seine. We had the most amazing service and food. 20 pounds each for 6 course meal in a room overlooking the main road leading to the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower. It really was nice. At the end of the meal they offered us a rose and two boxes of biscuits :)  

We left Xian yesterday morning by train and arrived in Guanzhou at 12.00pm today. We made our way to Shamian Island, which is an absolute paradise. We are staying at Guangdong Youth Hostel for 2 nights (180 yuan/night) before making our way back to Hong Kong and fly to Sydney on Saturday. We have arranged a bus at 80 yuan each. Shamian is really nice and a real break from mainland China. It is clean, quiet and visibly rich. We found out the reason why there are so many Americans out here is because it is a well known adoption location. It is a bit weird to see them all walking with Chinese babies strapped on the front. It looks a bit like a supermarket. The highlight of my day was to find some BRIE! OK it was danish but it certainly made me smile. I am getting serious cheese withdrawal and Mark talks about Milk and Cookies in his sleep, you know, the ones from Millies (pair of weirdos). We have not had any in 8 weeks. Just not on.

Comme prevu nous sommes alles au superbe restaurant francais a Xian, La Seine. Le service et les plats etaient divins. Pour 30 euros/personne, un repas de 6 plats dans une salle qui offre une vue de la rue principale, menant a la Tour de la Cloche et a la Tour du Tambour. Vraiment bien. A ;a fin du repas ils nous ont offert une rose et 2 boites de biscuits .                                                                          Nous avons quitte Xian hier matin en train et sommes arrives a Guangzhou ce midi. Nous avons fait notre chemin vers l’ile de Shamian, un petit paradis sur terre. Nous aons pris une chambre a International Youth Hostel, pour 2 nuits avant de repartir a Hong Kong et nous envoler vers Sydney Samedi. Nous avons arrange un transfert en bus depuis Shamian vers Kowloon pour 80 yuan chacun. Shamian est vraiment bien a voir et ca fait un break de la Chine principale. C’est propre, calme, et visiblement riche. Nous avons decouvert que la raison pour laquelle il y a tellement d’americains ici est parce que c’est un endroit bien connu pour adopter des bebes chinois. Ca fait bizarre de les voir marcher avec leur bebe chinois. Ca fait un peu supermarche. Le meilleur moment de ma journee est d’avoir trouve du BRIE! d’accord c’est danois et pas francais, mais ca m’a donne le sourire. J’en suis presque ai point d’echanger Mark pour une vache et faire mon fromage moi meme. Et Mark parle d’un verre de lait et de cookies dans son sommeil Ca fait 8 semaines qu’on a eu ni l’un ni l’autre! ca ne va pas durer!
