January 28, 2005Crime...and Punishment?
It's strange how your perceptions of a place can alter overnight, yesterday I saw Anyuan as a nice place full of community-spirited people with genuine friendly smiles. Today it's a shithole full of thieves whose smiles mask the fact they're laughing all the way to the bank with my cash. I've been burgled, and I am bitter. Someone got in through my window, and stole all my money. Actually it's a little more complicated than that but that's the gist of it. I was hoping for a trip to the cop shop to continue my worldwide study of police station interiors, but I made my statement at home instead. I don't know what I signed, it all looked like pictures to me. I will probably be in handcuffs tomorrow. I've never seen detectives at work before, except on TV of course- it was fun seeing them drawing little maps of my home and dusting everything with silver, black and copper coloured powder (which is ridiculously difficult to wash off). Police China now owns my fingers, and Brendan's. Brendan is unfortunate enough to be the only person who knew where my money was and to have his prints all over the evidence, as he closed my window before pointing out to me that it had been open. Bet he can't wait to get rid of me and my trouble-causing ways. I'm slightly worried about what will happen if they do catch the thief, I have limited knowledge of the Chinese justice system but an overactive imagination. I'd like to get the money back but I don't want to be hearing gunshots in the night. Comments
